This document (below) proclaims the King's approval at the appointment of William Browne as Custos Rotulorum, Keeper of the Rolls, (the highest civil position in the county) in 1818. The original is on parchment and measures 24" x 24".

 ~ Custos Rotulorum for the County of Carlow. ~

 

George the Third by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith and soforth. To all unto whom these presents shall come Greeting. Know ye that we of our special Grace and certain knowledge and mere motion Have made constituted and appointed our Trusty and well beloved William Browne of Browne's Hill Esquire keeper of the rolls of our peace, and all writs precepts processes and judicments whatsoever in any wise touching or concerning the keeping of our peace within our county of Carlow and him the said William Browne keeper of the Rolls of our peace and all writs precepts and processes judicments whatsoever in any wise touching or concerning the keeping of our peace in the said county we do by these presents make constitute and ordain To have hold and Enjoy the said office of the keeper of the rolls of our peace and all writs precepts processes and judicments whatsoever, in any sort touching or concerning the keeping of the peace within the said county to be executed by him the said William Browne or his sufficient Deputy during our pleasure together with all the fees and dues whatsoever to the said office in any sort belonging or appertaining In Witness whereof we have caused these our Letters to be made patent. Witness: Charles Chetwynd Earl Talbot our Lieutenant General and General the Governor of Ireland at Dublin, The seventh day of November in the fifty eight year of our reign Seal.

The following are suggestions for presentation of the data. extracted from Browne-Clayton Archive. The archive of nearly 3,000 items were presented earlier this year to Carlow County Library by Robert Browne-Clayton. Originally the archive was handed over to Michael Purcell for research and indexing but Michael realised that it was too large and important not to be in the care of professional archivists so Michael encouraged Robert to place the archive in the care of Carlow Library. It will remain there until such a time as a proper Archival Centre is established for Carlow. One result of this presentation is that now there is good news for researchers and students of history as it was announced recently that Carlow County Council intends to employ a qualified archivist and has advertised the position. The archive is being catalogued at present by County Librarian, Tom King, and will be available for research purposes in 2008,
