In 1797 Cornwall had "encouraged" over 800 men in the locality to take
the Oath of Allegiance to King George 111 and to his heirs on Land and
Sea.]

The
Information of William Dillon of Ballynockenan, Carlow, Farmer, taken
before John Cornwall, Esquire, one of his Majestys Justices of the
Peace who being duly sworn on the Holy Evanaglists saith that on
Monday he went to the Grounds of the widow Clowry to draw Tithe for
the Reverend Samuel Downing agreeable to notice served on said Mr
Downing by Anne Clowry of Moanmore, Carlow, Widow that William Dillon
was in the Act of Loading Hay that was shewn to him by Patrick Clowry
Son of Anne Clowry, as the hay was laid out for said Tithe when
Patrick Rigney, Darby Rigney and James Feltus all of Ballytarsna,
Carlow, Labourers, then in the employment of the said Anne Clowry did
forcibly and violently
seize two horses property of William Dillon that were under the cars
on which he and his men were loading the Tithe hay, and took the
horses from under the cars put them into a house and afterwards said
were sent to the pound in Tullow.
William Dillon further saith that one of the men was Darby Rigney took
the Loading of Hay off one of the cars by which William Dillon was
forcibly prevented drawing Tithe and that the said man that opposed
him that he may get a warrant against James Feltus said he would run
his pitchfork into him or any other person that would attempt to tithe
him.

John Clowry maketh oath that he usually resides
at Kilkea in the Townland of Kilkea in the Parish of Templepeter in
the Barony of Forth and in the County of Carlow.

- Michael Crowe, shopkeeper of Carlow acts as
bond £25.
- Thomas Fitzsimons, M..... ? Business, Carlow,
both act as Bond, £25.
- Sworn before J. Bennet and another [Brugh],
20th October 1814.
Surnames: Finn, Emerson, Butler,
Lecky, Merdith, Murphy, Gurly & Fishbourne.
[Note added 2012, two hundred years later this
wall (obviously raised a few feet since 1814!) remains standing,
fronting the premises known as "Greenville", formerly occupied by Dr.
Colgan and more recently by Tom Crotty.
Today
it is the offices of Brendan O'Flaherty, Solicitor & Notary Public,
Athy Road, Carlow.
The present building was erected circa 1876.]

- TO THE SESSIONS GRAND JURY OF THE
COUNTY OF CARLOW
- ASSEMBLED ON THE 13th DAY OF JANUARY 1814.
We the undersigned Inhabitants and Residents
of Athy Road adjoining the town of Carlow being exceedingly and
principally inconvenienced by a Wall lately erected by Mr John
Emerson, in front of Mr Michael Finns House and extending five feet or
more on the public High Road, request that the Gentlemen of the Grand
Jury will be graciously pleased to take into their consideration the
dangerous consequences that may result to his Majestys Subjects from
the continuance of this Wall which is too low to be seen of a dark
night, and from its projection into the Street might break their
Limbs, and otherwise injure their persons ~~
Carriages might be upset by it and Horses
ruined ~~.
~~~~~~~This Wall has been lately built by J.
Emerson under pretence of reestablishing an ancient boundary to his
field adjoining Mr Michael Finns House but has been left in such an
unfinished and dangerous state, that it calls loudly for the Justice
of the Country to interfere, and therefore the undersigned have
stepped forward to have it presented and abated as a public Nuisance
