Pat Purcell Papers
Fianna Boy Scouts

By kind permission of Mr Michael Purcell

Letter in the PPP.
Leix and Offaly Headquarters.
Old Jail, Portlaoise.
3rd April 1922.
To:
The Officer in Charge, Carlow Batt. Irish Republican Army.
and to:
The Head Centre of The Irish Republican Brotherhood, Carlow Branch.

A company of the "Fianna Boy Scouts" was established in Portlaoise on Sunday last. Since then the parents of some of the boys who joined have been approached by local "Free Staters" and advised not to allow their children to remain as members of the Fianna Boy Scouts as they claim it is a Republican organisation with affinity to Eamon de Valera !, some of the young Boy Scouts have been forced to leave. Even under British rule this organisation was regarded with respect by the authorities. I would like you to ask those "Free Staters" if this is the kind of Irish Republic they believe in ?. I am sending copies of this letter to the National newspapers or publication.

(signed) Eiblin ni h-Eoghain.
